Determination. Perseverance. Trailblazer. Commitment. Excellence. Those are just a few of the words that were often used this past weekend as friends and family of Dr. Shively T.J. Smith celebrated her and her efforts towards obtaining her doctorate degree in New Testament Studies from Emory University, Laney School of Graduate Studies, in Atlanta, Georgia.
Shively, Alisa and I met the summer of 1999 during Pre-Orientation at Fisk University in Nashville, TN. That summer, we had no idea that we would build the foundation to a lifelong friendship.
Dr. Smith is an individual that you want to keep an eye on. She is paving a road and breaking down barriers that will be beneficial to many coming after our generation. She is a great example to young ladies. She even inspires me that when you set a goal, though speed bumps may arise, you can still reach the finish line. Shively navigated through various life events that some may have accepted as dead ends. Rather than allowing life to give a dead end, she often choose to regroup and find an alternate route or a slight detour.
Her daughters know that they can do whatever they set their mind to because of the example Shivley puts in front of them.
Dr. Smith's oldest daughter completely understands how much work her mom had to do to achieve this accomplishment. She knows you have to work hard and always do your best.
I’m honored to be connected to such a wonderful woman. Dr. Shively T.J. Smith, the first African- American woman from to obtain a PhD in New Testament studies from Emory University.
A woman with unbeatable drive and determination. A woman that loves God, her family and friends. A woman that is already great and will be recorded in history to be even greater.
